Innocent people are being brutally murdered on the streets of New York City by a uniformed police officer. As the death toll rises and City Hall attempts a cover-up, Frank McCrae heads the investigation. A young cop, Jack Forrest, finds himself under arrestthe chief suspect, having been the victim of a set-up by the real killer and a mysterious woman phone-caller. Forrest, his girlfriend Theresa, and McCrae set out to solve the puzzle before the Maniac Cop can strike again.
As a fan of horror movies, mainly 80s slashers but being too young to have been raised it that era I have to often hunt out horrors, thankful for internet shopping!<br/><br/>I got hold of Maniac Cop,a Bruce Campbell fanwella fan of this genre I was very interested in seeing this film but with low hopes, often I watch horrors which are clearly just slapped out to make money without a lot of passion put into them.<br/><br/>I was pleasantly surprised!<br/><br/>The acting was great from all the cast, you really feel the characters, you begin to root for Jack Forest (Campbell) and Theresa Malory (Laurene Landon). Also Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) was a great character to balance out the all the other mistrust and wrongful accusations that are present in the film, at least there's another "hero". Matt Cordell was a great villain (Robert Z'Dar) , loved his look, he's a classic 80s style slasher silent stalker, Myers or Voorhees style.<br/><br/>The plot is quite simple really, murder and revenge. The deaths are done well, nothing really too gruesome but not too tame either.<br/><br/>I found it very enjoyable and glad I bought it, will be watching it again soon.
Ok, after along time I got around to renting this one. And wow. With a premise like a maniac cop, it allows the filmmakers to add in feelings where 'is that a real cop or the maniac cop' and it really works. I'd say its more of a thriller with some grisly murders. I usually don't like many thrillers but this movie grabbed me and never let go until the end. its got great suspense. This movie works very well for what it is. A low budget thriller. And thats what you'll get. A movie full of thrills.

In Japan a special cut was aired for television that features several prolonged story pieces that can't be found in the Theatrical Version of this movie. This adds up to a toal difference of nearly six minutes between both cuts.<br/><br/>In Britain the movie was released cut on VHS, whereas the DVD features the original uncensored Theatrical Version.
