a5c7b9f00b A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both.
When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
I admit this is actually one of my favourite films, however I can appreciate it isn't classically fantastic so have rated it a 7.<br/><br/>I think that the main actress is always very good. It's slightly teenagery-lovery which puts me off slightly, however despite this it isn't a classic teenage love story and has more depth than most. I particularly like the musicit is very subtle and gives the film a nice quality and feel. For me this film has a similar feel to oblivion in sci-fi feel which I like.
I was never touched by the hype about this movie, so I had a pretty clear mind when rating it. I try to never rate a movie whether I liked it or not, I rate it by how well it was done.<br/><br/>From the perspective of aesthetics - it was very well done. The scenery was beautiful, the backgrounds were always good looking. It was a feast for the eyes least to say, if you didn't enjoy the story.<br/><br/>The pace is really slow, maybe a bit too slow, but nevertheless, quite fitting. It allows the viewer to develop a connection to the characters, feel what they feel, understand why they do what they do. In that part, the movie did great. Of course, the pace could have been slightly quickened, but that's a minority. I must say though, if a viewer will come and negate or barricade himself/herself from any emotions or connections in a movie, then he/she will most certainly rate the movie down and trample it. I understand that romance, especially in sci-fi world, isn't everyone's favorite dish. But then again, why would a romance hater go to a romantic movie.<br/><br/>The story was highly beautiful, but maybe could have been more informative - since some questions were left unanswered. Butmentioned before, the story was written to be moving and tear jerking. The viewer had to feel it. (I must say, I did not even know this was a romance movie at first (since I picked it at random, didn't even read description), but even that fact didn't limit me from getting into it).<br/><br/>There were some slightly cliché moments, but other than that, the movie was absolutely beautiful. It really requires the viewer to get into it - if you block yourself away from it, then I can guarantee you will not like it. Expect the beauty, open yourself to it, and you will experience it.<br/><br/>9/10
The Host will make perfect sense to 12-year-old girls, while their college-age sisters will probably laugh themselves sick and their mothers will look at Hurt and wonder when he got so old.
